Drinking Acid


Question:  What is the most acidic thing we drink?

 

Hypothesis:  I think that soda is the most acidic thing because I saw it on the computer.

 

Materials:  pH paper, water (well water), soda (Sprite), orange juice (Florida's Natural), milk (Horizon organic 2%), tea (Bigelow spiced apple cider herb tea), sports drink (Powerade strawberry lemonade), 18 plastic cups, measuring cup

 

Procedure:

            1.  Pour half a cup of the liquid into a plastic cup.

            2. Wait 1 hour.

            3. Test with wide range pH paper. Write down pH.

            4. Choose narrow range pH paper and test. Write down pH.

            5. Pour the liquid into sink. Do next liquid.

            6. Do each liquid 3 times.

 

Variables:

            Manipulated Variable:  kind of drink

            Responding Variable:  pH

            Controlled Variables:  how much liquid, pH paper kind, temperature of liquid

Results: Sports drink is the most acidic drink. Milk is the most neutral drink. I was surprised that the sports drink was the most acidic drink. The drinks from most acidic to the least: sports drink, soda, o.j. (tie), tea (tie), water, milk. My results are important because if things are too acidic they will eat your teeth.
